Animated Arithmetic by Flix Productions

The Animated Arithmetic CD for Windows and Win 95 teaches addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for children from 1st through 4th grades. It provides exercises in addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Problems can involve up to 9 digits. More than just a drill program, progressive help is given as needed to instruct the child to solve the problems. The multiplication and division problems are based on the multiplication table from 1 to 10, it teaches mental math in a painless way. Progressive help is given as needed when the student is having difficulty with a particular problem (not just a Wrong! response from the computer). Once ten problems are completed, the student gets to visit the game room. There are over 20 puzzles using 3D animation and sound on the registered CD ROM. The child can choose 12, 24, or 48 pieces. Hints for solving the puzzles are available, or the child can have the computer solve the puzzle and enjoy the (mostly silly) animation. There is also a maze game where the child can play mazes of varying complexity (which are rewarded with an animation when solved), or make and save their own mazes for their friends to try and solve. You can even choose to have the computer solve the maze - watching it find it's way out can be fascinating. There is over 160 Meg of animation and sound in the games on the CD!

Quadruple 128 bit Floating Point Library by Jeff Pasternack

Signed 128-bit floating point data type library, with 64 effective bits of precision (vs. 53 for the built-in Double type) and a 64 bit exponent (vs. 11 for Doubles). With greater precision and far greater range, Quads are especially useful when dealing with very large or very small values, such as those in probabilistic models. Adopting a larger fixed precision rather than an arbitrary precision type (such as Java's BigDecimal) means that, while still slower than built-in arithmetic, the penalty is only an order of magnitude or less and thus still feasible in many math-heavy applications. For example, on an Intel Core i5-2410M laptop, a billion multiplications takes 17 seconds with Double values, 135 seconds with Quad values using the overloaded * operator, and just 76 seconds using the Multiply() method (the higher overhead of * is due to the poor inlining logic of the .Net compiler/JIT optimizer). By comparison, the commonly-used workaround for multiplication underflow and overflow, summing logarithms, takes 130 seconds. In addition to being faster and more precise than log arithmetic, Quads also simplify code by eliminating the need to remember which variables are log'd and converting back and forth to log'd values. The Quadruple library is written in C# (source code included) and targets .Net 4.0; it should also be easily portable to .Net 2.0 and similar languages (such as Java) with straightforward modifications.

The Year in Special Operations 2011-2012 Edition

The Year in Special Operations 2011-2012 Edition English | 148 Pages | 102MB | PDF May 2, 2011 - As the sun rose over America this day, it shone on a nation celebrating the news of the successful mission that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. To say that the members of the U.S. special operations forces (SOF) community were obsessive in their desire to be the ones to bring him to justice is a vast understatement. Even before the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11, U.S. SOF leaders knew they would lead the fight against al Qaeda worldwide, and that they would be tasked by America to avenge the nearly 3,000 dead of that day as well as previous attacks. It took almost a decade, far too many casualties, and involved a search many thought would never end in success, but May 1, 2011, U.S. SOF warriors and professionals of the intelligence community got him.
